Moderate rainfall expected in ghats this week
Anupam Kashyapi, head of the weather forecasting division at IMD Pune, told TOI: “The weather forecast indicates a high probability of an increase in rainfall activity over Maharashtra, particularly in Pune district and the ghat areas, starting from Tuesday afternoon. This time, soil is already wet and saturated. In light of this forecast, it is advised to avoid visiting south Konkan and the ghats of Pune and Satara from Tuesday afternoon.”
He said that the weather system that may increase rainfall intensity is a low pressure area situated over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, off the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coast, extending up to the middle tropospheric levels. The low pressure area is expected to strengthen further and is likely to intensify and concentrate into a depression over the same region around Wednesday. Subsequently, the depression is projected to move slowly in a west-northwestward direction, passing across the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts.
There is also an active monsoon trough in the region, which is running to the south of its normal position. These weather conditions are favourable for the enhancement of rainfall in the affected areas.
As per the IMD forecast, there is a likelihood of light to moderate, fairly widespread to widespread, rainfall over Konkan and Goa and the ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra from Tuesday to Friday. Additionally, isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is also expected in these regions during the same period. A significant weather event is expected around Wednesday, with the possibility of isolated extremely heavy rainfall in these areas.
Vineet Kumar Singh, a weather expert watching Pune rains, said: “As per the forecast by the IMD Global Forecast System, Pune is set to witness consistent rainfall in the upcoming days. From July 24 to 27, core Pune city is expected to receive around 7mm to 10mm of rainfall daily, while the western parts of the city may see a slightly higher quantum, ranging from 12mm to 14mm. The rainfall amounts recorded in Pune from Sunday 8.30am till Monday 8.30am, meanwhile, were the third highest in a 24-hour period this monsoon season.”
