As Pune gears up for Diwali, MSEDCL issues list of do’s and don’ts

With Diwali right around the corner, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has urged citizens to ensure electrical safety during the festival period, especially while using electrical decorations, lighting and fireworks. Along with the public power system, one should be cautious of household lighting electrical appliances, MSEDCL officials have appealed.

“Diwali should be celebrated in a safe manner,” officials said adding that caution should be exercised about about household electrical appliances.

“If electrical wires, lamps, sockets are not of good quality, it can cause danger. Proper earthing of the house or building should be checked. Avoid using broken wire when installing sky lanterns outdoors or secure the broken wire with good quality insulation tape. Along with household appliances, oil lamps should be kept at a safe distance from electrical outlets. Do not overload electrical sockets,” the power utility mentioned these among their list of do’s and don’ts.

In an official statement, MSEDCL authorities have pointed out that for sky lanterns or lamp strings, the wires are pushed directly into the plug holes with matchsticks, without the use of three pins. “So there is a possibility of sparking in that plug and causing a fire. The wire of electric lamps and sky lanterns should be kept away from the iron grating in the gallery or the iron staircase of the house or any other iron object. This wire should be unified,” the authorities said.

While bursting firecrackers, utility officials have also urged citizens to maintain a safe distance from high and low voltage overhead power lines, rotors and feeder pillars. “Care should be taken to ensure that there is no risk of fire to the public power system during fireworks display. Firecrackers should not be burst near fuse boxes, feeder pillars or ring main units, or pose a threat to overhead power lines.Firecrackers should be fired in open spaces,” they added. In case of fire, danger or power failure in the electrical system, contact the toll free number 1800-212-3435 or 1800-233-3435 or 1912 of the 24-hour call center of MSEDCL.
