Devotees can expect to welcome the Ganesh festival with showers. According to a special weather forecast given by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), rain is likely in Pune and surrounding areas on Ganesh Chaturthi.
“Partly cloudy sky becoming generally cloudy towards afternoon/evening, light rain very likely (isolated heavy rain in ghat areas),” stated Tuesday’s forecast.
On Sunday, Pune and the catchment areas of four dams, including Khadakwalsa, Panshet, Varasgaon and Temghar, recorded good showers. The collective water storage in these four dams has gone up to 27.27 TMC. It is 93.57% of the total capacity.
Pune recorded 1.1 mm rainfall on Sunday. “The showers were recorded in the morning, and after that, subdued rainfall activity was seen throughout the day. Cloudy conditions prevailed,” said an IMD official.
According to weather forecasts and warnings of central and west India, light to moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms and lightning is very likely over western Madhya Pradesh and north Konkan on Sunday and Monday, north Madhya Maharashtra on Sunday, Gujarat and south Rajasthan from Sunday to Tuesday, and Saurashtra and Kutch from Sunday to Wednesday.
A warning of “isolated extremely heavy rainfall very likely” over Gujarat region on Sunday and Monday was issued.
According to the weather department, heavy rain means 64.5 to 115.5 mm of rain, while very heavy rain means 115.6 to 204.4 mm of rainfall in 24 hours. Any showers that are above 204.4 mm in 24 hours are considered to be extremely heavy.
Rainfall between 0.1 mm to 15.5 mm is very light to light rain.
After good showers, the Panshet and Warasgaon dams are almost full. They have over 99% water of their total capacity. Khadakwalsa is 56.22 % full, while Temghar is 76.77% full.
