In a significant crackdown, the Pimpri Chinchwad Anti-Gunda Squad conducted a major operation in Pimpri, targeting a bookie involved in betting during the England vs South Africa cricket match. The police have seized a staggering Rs 40 lakhs cash during this operation. The arrested individual has been identified as Dinesh Harish Sharma (38), a resident of Adi Amma Bliss Society of Kalewadi area. The operation, which took place on Saturday, resulted in the apprehension of Sharma while he was engaged in betting on the England vs South Africa cricket match through a mobile application.
The police, under the guidance of Assistant Police Inspector Harish Mane, acted swiftly based on crucial information received. Technical analysis led the police to Flat No. 701 in Adi Amma Bliss Society, Kalewadi, where the illegal betting activities were traced. Sharma, the accused, was found using the ‘Cricket Live Line Guru’ application to place bets. The odds offered were 1 rupee for 60 paise if England won and 1 rupee for 61 paise if South Africa won. These odds fluctuated with the match’s progress, allowing Sharma to place bets using the app as per the changing dynamics of the game.
This crackdown is part of the strict measures implemented to curb illegal betting activities, especially during high-profile matches like the ongoing World Cup 2023. The accused has been charged under the Maharashtra Gambling Act and the Indian Telegraph Act following a case registered at Wakad Police Station. Along with the Rs 40.8 lakhs in cash, the police also confiscated two mobile phones and a calculator from the accused and his associates.
