Pune witnesses sharpest spike of Covid-19 cases

In what could be a major concern, Pune witnessed its highest one day increase of 1812 Covid-19 cases on Thursday.

Till July 16, the total positive cases stood at 44968 while the total deaths stood at 1214.Meanwhile, the number of active cases stands at 14796.

Concerning the state, Maharashtra recorded its highest single-day spike with 8641 cases, taking the total numbers to 2,84,281.

Mumbai accounted for 1476 cases with 56 deaths. Meanwhile, the total recoveries in the state stand at 1,58,140.There has been a mixed response to the lockdown in various areas of Pune and PCMC. The first day of the lockdown witnessed a long line of vehicles on the busy stretch of Sancheti hospital chowk and roads of the city.

The response in PCMC has been good in many places as people preferred to stay put in homes. With many industries functioning, PCMC is witnessing some rush in the morning and evenings.

Meanwhile, on Friday, India became the third country in the world to record more than one million cases behind the United States and Brazil.

As per the Union health ministry, the Covid-19 tally got past ten lakh on Friday, just three days after it crossed the nine lakh mark.

The lockdown is being imposed in two phases with the first phase being from July 13 to 18 and the second phase from July 18 to 23.
