Pune: In an extraordinary display of coordination and commitment, a liver transplant team from DPU Super Specialty Hospital, Pimpri, successfully conducted a life-saving transplant after transporting a donor liver from Mumbai to Pune via a green corridor in under two hours.

On the afternoon of 25th January , the transplant team received an urgent notification of a liver donation from a brain-dead male donor in Mumbai. The liver was destined for a critically ill patient on the transplant waitlist at DPU Super Specialty Hospital. With time of the essence, the team swiftly set out for Mumbai in the early hours of 26th January and reached Mumbai at approximately 3:00 AM. Following a delicate and complex four-hour retrieval surgery, the challenge was to transport the liver back to Pune as quickly as possible to minimize cold ischemia time and preserve the organ’s viability. Adding to the logistical complexity, the operation coincided with Republic Day celebrations, with the route passing through areas of flag-hoisting ceremonies and possibly large gatherings. However, a meticulously planned green corridor—established through the exemplary collaboration of the Maharashtra Police Department, Traffic Police and guidance from the Police Commissioners of Mumbai and Pimpri Chinchwad—ensured uninterrupted passage for the medical team.

The green corridor facilitated the liver’s transportation from Mumbai to Pune in record time, reaching the hospital just as the recipient patient was being prepared for surgery. The transplant team, led by Dr. Vrishali Patil(Program director and HOD of Multi Organ Transplant and HPB surgery, DPU Super Specialty Hospital), successfully transplanted the liver, granting the critically ill patient a renewed chance at life.

The donor, who had tragically suffered a brain hemorrhage, became a beacon of hope and life for the recipient patient. The hospital’s transplant coordinators and administration, along with the donor’s hospital staff, worked in perfect synchronization to honor this invaluable gift. This green corridor operation, executed on the auspicious occasion of Republic Day, stands as a testament to the collective spirit of humanity, selflessness and professionalism. With the unwavering support of the Management, Hon’ble Dr. (Mrs.) Bhagyashree Patil, Pro-Chancellor of Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pimpri, Pune (Deemed to be University) and Dr. Yashraj Patil, Trustee and Treasurer of the institution, along with the tireless efforts of the medical teams, police personnel and the generosity of the donor family, this moment of personal tragedy was transformed into a life-saving gift for another.
