The irrigation department has increased the water discharge from Pavana Dam following a continuous rainfall reported in the catchment areas for the last few hours. According to officials, the water discharge from dam was increased to 3,500 cusescs from 8 am today including 1,500 cusescs from power generation plant and 2,100 cusescs from the dam.
The citizens living around Pavana river have been advised to take precautions and remove their animals and other belongings from river basin. The irrigation department has also asked the concerned authorities to alert the citizens living in low lying areas to be on alert and take appropriate precautions when needed. Decision to further increase discharge will be taken based on rainfall situation in the catchment area, said officials. The dam supplies water to Pimpri Chinchwad and adjoining areas. The dam has been filled upto 100% of its capacity.
The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for the Pune district for the next two days. According to IMD, the district is likely to witness ‘Heavy rainfall and Thunderstorm with lightning at isolated places’ on September 7 and 8. The district has started receiving a good rainfall from yesterday after a long dry spell.
